Below is the original solicitation for the comic:

After a year in space solving the mystery of Krypton’s demise, Supergirl returns to Earth to discover that everything she knew as Kara Danvers is gone! Plus, the usurper Brainiac-1 has set his sights on the unsuspecting Girl of Steel - and his plans are far from benevolent!

However, DC made an error: the solicitation, the cover story logo ("Year of the Villain - Dark Gifts") on both editions and also the cover art on the regular edition no longer matched the story inside. Note that a similar error was also made on Superman #14.

A recall notice was issued:

Retailers, please be advised that DC will provide replacement copies of Supergirl #33 and SUPERGIRL #33.

Due to advance production schedules, the covers of both issues ultimately did not reflect the contents of the stories. Replacement copies with new covers will be provided at no cost to retailers.

Retailers who receive copies of Supergirl #33 main and variant editions (JUN190540 - JUN190541) or SUPERGIRL #33 main and variant editions (JUN190538 - JUN190539) are asked to destroy them when they arrive in stores.

The replacement copies of the SUPERGIRL #33 main edition will have a new cover by Kevin Maguire. This, as well as the variant edition replacment copies, are scheduled to arrive in stores on September 4 without "Year of the Villain" branding on the covers. Retailers will be credited for these issues on their August 21 invoices.

Above are the replacement regular edition, with it's new cover art, as well as the variant edition with the "Year of the Villain - Dark Gifts" story logo removed.

At the time of writing, in mid-March 2021, the CGC Census recorded 56 gradings for the "Recalled Edition" (with 4 in the top grade of 9.8) and 127 gradings of the "Recalled Edition/Variant Cover" (with 116 in the top grade of 9.8).

At that same time, the CBCS Population report recorded twelve gradings of the "Recalled Edition (six in the top grade of 9.8) and eleven gradings of the "Recalled Variant Edition" (nine in the top grade of 9.8).

It is not known how many of the recalled issues made it into stores, but it was reported that Diamond did manage to stop a not insignificant quantity.
