Below is the original solicitation for the comic:
Lex Luthor is back in Metropolis--and he's ready to wreak havoc! First stop, the most dangerous woman in the DC Universe: Lois Lane! Alone, her family a galaxy away, will Lois be tempted by Apex Lex's offer? What does Lex have that this reporter can't turn away from? Don't miss this shocking new twist in the Superman mythos!
However, DC made an error: the solicitation, the cover story logo ("Year of the Villain - Dark Gifts") on both editions and also the cover art on the regular edition no longer matched the story inside. Note that a similar error was also made on Supergirl #33.
A recall notice was issued:
Retailers, please be advised that DC will provide replacement copies of SUPERMAN #14 and SUPERGIRL #33.
Due to advance production schedules, the covers of both issues ultimately did not reflect the contents of the stories. Replacement copies with new covers will be provided at no cost to retailers.
Retailers who receive copies of SUPERMAN #14 main and variant editions (JUN190540 - JUN190541) or SUPERGIRL #33 main and variant editions (JUN190538 - JUN190539) are asked to destroy them when they arrive in stores.
The replacement copies of the SUPERMAN #14 main edition will have a new cover by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado. This, as well as the variant edition replacment copies, are scheduled to arrive in stores on August 28 without "Year of the Villain" branding on the covers.
The replacement copies were in stores a couple of weeks later at the end of August (2019-08-28) and the solicitation was also revised:
A final confrontation between Superman's family, the House of El, and the monster who destroyed Krypton, Rogol Zaar leads to unexpected revelations about the destruction of Krypton, while also becoming the foundation for alliances that'll stretch to the 31stCentury.
Above are the replacement regular edition, with new cover art, as well as the later second print, which used the same art:
Below is the replacement Hughes variant with the "Year of the Villain - Dark Gifts" story logo removed:
At the time of writing, in mid-March 2021, the CGC Census recorded 125 gradings for the "Recalled Edition" (with 111 in the top grade of 9.8) and 54 gradings of the "Recalled Edition/Variant Cover" (with 41 in the top grade of 9.8).
At that same time, the CBCS Population report recorded 17 gradings of the "Recalled Edition (15 in the top grade of 9.8) and 11 gradings of the "Recalled Variant Edition" (10 in the top grade of 9.8).
It is not known how many of the recalled issues made it into stores, but it was reported that Diamond did manage to stop a not insignificant quantity.
